Sleeping Giant Inn, Riverwood, Whiterun, Skyrim

I had a strange and terrible nightmare. Vague scenes of entering one cave after another and slaying dozens and dozens of people who just sat there and didn't do anything. I knew somehow that they had plans of coming out of their lair, descending the mountains and overrunning Riverwood, Helgen and Falkert, to establish their own little bandit kingdom in the area south of Lake Ilinalta. They didn't know the civil war was over. The thought of lovely beautiful peaceful Riverwood falling into the hands of those animals was making me sick, and at the same time I was nauseous from massacring a huge number of people who paid no attention to me when I entered, thinking I was one of them.

I don't know what the dream was supposed to mean. Was it prescience of what we'd need to do for Faralda's quest, or a discharge of my accumulated repulsion at things I've had to do so far?

We're headed southeast to find North Skybound Watch, where there's supposed to be a pedestal onto which I'll have to place Faralda's book and cast a frost spell at it. To tell you the truth, I'm not at all sure we can even ascend the mountains from this direction. Until now, we have only traveled along the path that passes the Fox Club, leads southwestwards and ends up on the road to Helgen. Hadvar said there's another path up the hills. I hope we can find it.

"Laura," I hear Jordis's voice as we're walking along the empty street towards the Fox Club.
"What?"
"Can we not go up there? Please."
I look at her. She doesn't seem to be aware that she's trembling. It can't be cold.
"Okay."
I turn around and head back towards the inn. Apparently Jordis has had some kind of a horrible precognition of her own, possibly because she was sleeping with me, but this is neither the time nor the place to discuss it. Let's just go to Hviterun. Not that I can't make decisions without Jenassa all of a sudden. I'm just reluctant to hang around and let the villagers notice us not going to the mountains after all and start wondering why. Besides, I've told you I've been feeling for some time now that I've had enough adventures. This seems like a welcome excuse to start taking it easy.

On the corner of the main street, we turn right and head for the city. The sun hasn't quite risen yet.

I lead us through the forest. With any luck, the wolves should leave us alone today.

When we're across the hills and are seeing the houses in the valley, I tell Lydia and Ghorbash to run ahead, and motion Jordis to sit down next to me.

I look at her. "Anything you want to tell me? A scary dream?" I know and she knows I've had many prophetic dreams, so why couldn't she? We've learned to take such things seriously.
"I saw myself getting killed. We went into a cave with 20 or 30 men and we started to shoot at them, and then one of them ran to me and stabbed me to death, snap, just like that. I know it's silly, but..."
I don't say anything.
"Laura, I'd like to take a break."
I'm still not sure how to reply, because what she says is so eerily reflecting what I've been feeling.
"I can look after your house in Markarth," Jordis says hesitantly.
My house? It's our house.
"I'm terribly sorry."
"Jordis..." I reach out to touch her arm. "It's all right. I... of course you can take some time off. We can run with Valdimar, it's no problem at all. Besides, I haven't really realized until now how fed up I am with wandering around and killing people. Especially those fucking stupid caves where you can't see properly. And putting you all in danger. I'm so sorry!" To my own and certainly Jordis's utter astonishment, I suddenly break out in sobs.

Apparently, Jordis is at loss what to do with me, because it takes a while until I feel her getting closer and hugging me gingerly.

The following minutes are a little blurry. When I've finally composed myself, we lie in the grass in embrace – not doing anything sexual, just trying to be as close as possible, in order to give each other support and reassurance.

And the wolves did leave us alone.  :-)

It's clear to me now that I have enough of being the hero Dragonborn. I no longer enjoy traveling around Skyrim. That is because I have too much to lose. Remember I told you on the first days of my adventures that I have to go out and do things or I'll never achieve anything? That's in the past now. I have achieved a lot. I no longer need to expose myself to dangers.
"We'll travel to Solitud and tell Elisif you're ready to leave now, okay?" says Jordis as if reading my thoughts.
I loosen myself from the embrace and turn and look her timidly in the eyes. She was the one trembling, and now she has to comfort me instead.
I nod. It's high time to put an end to this madness. My parents and siblings don't even know I'm alive, yet I'm roaming about Skyrim pursuing fuck knows what.
When I say that to Jordis, she asks: "Does your feeling guilty make anyone happy?"

This is the moment that changes everything for me. Sometimes a simple question with an obvious answer can make you see something you have been blind to until then.

D o e s   y o u r   f e e l i n g   g u i l t y   m a k e   a n y o n e   h a p p y ?

I'm suddenly aware how I have been beating myself up unnecessarily. It doesn't sound like much when I say it like this, but I really feel like a switch has been turned in my brain.
I am leaving forever behind the remorse for having done what I had to do. I will rejoice and appreciate all the beautiful things in my life. No more emotional suicide.

I have to laugh and Jordis laughs and we hug and help each other get up and start walking downhill towards the farm southwest of Hviterun.

There are 18 days until Lydia's birthday. After that, I'll leave for High Rock. Until then, I'll just get some rest and spend time with my loved ones and such. No more killing. I've really had enough. And I've done enough. No one can deny that. Alduin is dead and the civil war is over. I have every right to wash my hands of the new war and all the remaining bandits and whatever magical threats that may emerge. Remember, I said a long time ago that the fate of Skyrim ultimately lies in the hands of the people of Skyrim themselves? Now the time has arrived when they'll have to make do without me.

I'd say their prospects look very good.

I stretch out my hand and Jordis takes it. We descend unhurriedly, looking at the windmill and the fields and the houses and the city as if seeing it all for the first time, taking it all in, grateful to be alive and to be together and able to see and hear and smell and feel all this.

Dunparwall Inn, Dunparwall, Hjaalmarch, Skyrim

I had a weird dream. I was flying up Mount Nexus, but from the northern side. I floated towards that fortress one can see from the ground, the one we always assumed to be High Hrothgar. I realized now it's impossible to see High Hrothgar from the outskirts of Hviterun. What we had seen was something entirely different. It was halfway between Riverwood in the west-southwest and High Hrothgar in the east.

Floating closer, I thought for a moment I was seeing Alduin, and then Paarthurnax, and then they were both gone. Don't ask me how I was able to recognize it was them.

Looking at the defense wall more closely, I noticed it went right into the mountain. And the external part was partially hanging in the air.

I wondered if I could fly further northeast along the edge of the forbidding mountains.

Yes, I could. And east-northeast of High Hrothgar, halfway to Hillgrund's Tomb, I found some more stone fortifications, much more human-built-like. They were on two sides of a mountain and apparently connected. Meaning, there were in all likelihood some structures inside the mountain.

I wake up in my bed at the Dunparwall inn. What Hillgrund's Tomb? I've never heard that name in my life.

I go down to the taproom and fix myself a breakfast, leaving money on the bar counter. My followers turn up soon and we explore some more of Dunparwall. After visiting the malachite mine they have here, we find that famous site with ancient carvings on stone walls.

When I look at them, I suddenly see a place in my mind's eye where a path leads up a mountain from the Windhelm–Hviterun highway. Hillgrund's Tomb is up there and it might be a site worth checking out. Then my thoughts wander to that strange fortification on the western side of Mount Nexus. I have an intuition that Alduin resided there, maybe in our time, maybe thousands of years ago, and maybe the mountain had a different shape back then and the fortress was not partially inside the mountain. Or maybe a dragon wouldn't need the kind of space humans would and that half-fortress-half-mountain was just the kind of structure where a dragon would feel comfortable. It no longer matters, because Alduin no longer exists. Somehow I know now he is really permamently dead.

And I have a horrible hunch that after I had physically killed Alduin, Paarthurnax destroyed himself with him on the etheric plane to make absolutely sure Alduin would never appear again to attack Nirn.

I'm not certain about the last point, but if feels very true, at least while I'm standing at this arguably the most ancient and mysterious site in all of Skyrim.

We now say goodbye to this nice if harsh town and travel south, passing by Laintar Dale where everyone is still sleeping or at least inside their houses.

We travel towards the mountains on the northern bank of the White River northeast of Hviterun. Short of Alessian Ruins, we witness a virr fighting a very big atronach who doesn't seem to have a master. We help him kill it. He's quite handsome.

We find a place where we have a good view to Mount Nexus. As far as I can tell, everything looks exactly like in my dream. Beyond the plain across the White River with very high steep banks, there's a weirdly-shaped fort on the right mountainside, as well as another obviously artificial structure up the mountain on the left which may or may not be the one I saw in my dream.

Well, there's not much we can do other than head west, towards the city.

When you approach Hviterun from northeast, the first building is The Naked Dragon brothel.
stone pavilion up on a round raised stone platform whosewalls have elaborate Dwemer carvings
No, my little friend, the Fox Club is in Riverwood and I'm afraid you won't be welcome there either.

We're going to check it out now – using that brilliant pretext made up by Jordis of searching for skooma.

Ghorbash asks if he may wait for us outside. I tell him to feel free to walk around and socialize. In fact, there's an Orc blacksmith outside a house across the street who can be seen working right now.

I enter the brothel with the girls.
large Dwemer-style hall, big yellow dragon statue, people sitting, a couple of fireplaces near the wall
Have they no imagination? The only way the statue of a dragon
would make sense in a place like this would be lying on its back with its legs spread.

Now, this establishment is quite different from the others. They don't have any bedrooms as such! There's only a huge room with a pool behind the main hall.
a dark-skinned woman and a light-skinned one farther away sit at a large pool in a Dwemer-style hall
They have imagination all right.

Four naked girls are sitting in it at the moment. (The rest are in the main hall fully dressed.) This is so fantastic I'm having real difficulties resisting the urge to throw my clothes off and jump in with them. But I must hold myself back, with the proprietor, a very serious-looking old man, standing right beside me. Not entirely without sarcasm, he says he assures me nobody is hiding any skooma here.

While checking the rest of the brothel, I can't help asking where would a customer go when he fancies a girl. I learn that he'll have to do his thing on one of the four large soft mats in the corners of the pool hall.

So technically there is no privacy as such here, but the girls have strict orders to mind their own business rather than stand around the couple commenting and giggling. There's also an unwritten rule that the customers act like they're not even seeing the other customers. It's a well-established system by now and everybody knows the customs and it works fine. Still, whenever someone wants guaranteed privacy, he can reserve the entire pool hall for himself or take a girl away, in which case he'll pay in advance for the time in addition to the sex fee that is paid afterwards like everywhere. If he uses more time than he paid for, there is double fee for the additional time. However, if he uses less time, he'll get no refund for the unused time, so he'll have to estimate in advance as precisely as he can how much time he'll need.

Of course the services are provided to men only, as I know without needing (or daring) to ask.

Yeah, and we find no skooma.

Among all the brothels I've seen, this is the most snobbish one. The personnel shows no friendliness towards uninvited curious female guests whatsoever. The women in the main hall are, however, very cordial with the male guests. There was no one having sex in the pool hall while we were there. The four girls who waited there looked quite content.

All in all, I can heartily recommend to all men who might be reading this to check the place out when you happen to be in Hviterun. Or even better, find a woman wherever you currently are and make her happy. [grin]

Well, enough of that. We exit the brothel and walk around separately now, exchanging news and such. On my way to the city gate, I run into Borgakh on the street. She lives with the blacksmith Lerguk now who has a modest house right here in the eastern suburb. They intend to get married. Borgakh actually wanted to get married before giving up her virginity, but he kept insisting on having sex first, and finally she gave in. But she tells me that should he dump her, she'll kill him no matter what the consequences. There are no indications of that, though.

I'm happy for them. Borgakh and I sit and chat for a while and then I head for the marketplace.
Hviterun marketplace, well in the foreground, three market stalls, Ysolda walks up the stairs on the left
It's not a very busy day on the market. On the right, in front of The Bannered Mare inn, is the stall of Fralia Gray-Mane,
the mother of Thorald and Avulstein. The woman with the hood is the priestess Danica. Jenassa's ex-boyfriend Anoriath
has left for a moment. In front of his stall stands Brenuin, the beggar who in the past helped Lucia over the toughest times.
You can see Ysolda walk up the stairs towards the temple square. And the stall on the left is Carlotta's. She is here,
just outside the frame. Behind me are Belethor's general store on my left and Arcadia's alchemy shop on my right.

Lucia and Mila accompany me on a leisurely walk up to the palace, overflowing me with the latest gossip.

I show Faralda's magic book to Farengar and ask him if he knows what that cryptic description means. He says he'll think about it and I should come back later. I can tell he knows and he intends to demand sex in return, but he doesn't want to say it with the children listening.

We hear loud cheering. Mila dashes to see what's going on and comes back running ten seconds later with the news Jenassa has come to visit. I must say I'm not too surprised. She has even taken Nelacar with her. I show him the magical book and he says the description sounds like Skybound Watch that is in the region of Helgen and Riverwood.

Awesome. We leave Nelacar talking to Farengar and I look meaningfully at Mikki who is passing by, and point at Lucia. She gets the hint and invites Lucia to come with her. Lucia looks at me and I tell her: go ahead, we'll be right here. Mila leaves with them. Now I can withdraw into a quiet corner with Jenassa. I ask her if she's still available and she assures me she is. I tell her all about Ghorbash and how we have some plans with him, so I won't take Jenassa back right now, but would it be possible for her to stay in Hviterun for a few days? She says it's no problem.

Before the actual party begins, I find Lucia and inform her I'm going to have a bath in The Bannered Mare.

Wearing one of my beautiful yet decent dresses, I return to the palace around five o'clock.

two little girls stand ahead looking this way on the street that leads to the Temple of Kynareth
Those two children look like they're up to some mischief.  ;-)

After being thrown in the air and receiving her congratulations and presents, Heidi takes us to a hike, climbing up and down the city fortifications.

Did you know that this bridge
can be raised up with the help of this mechanism?

While we're outside the main gate, a thunderstorm begins. We all get soaking wet and find it hilarious.

And then we return to the palace, singing over the rumble.
night, stone stairway leads up to the Hviterun palace, a lightning strikes far on the left
The lightnings are very far this time, so no danger.

We dance some to dry up quicker, and then I find an opportunity to talk to Ghorbash in private and explain her Jordis honestly wanted the best for him, and for a woman to suck a man's penis is considered perfectly normal among humans. Or more precisely, men are crazy about it and women need to overcome some (or much) reluctance first.

We end up talking about all kinds of things. Then Ghorbash says he's been wanting to ask me something, and I say to go ahead, and he says he's sorry if it sounds harsh, but he can't understand how we can have casual sex with men like that (not that he's not enjoying it), and for that matter, how can a man want to marry a woman who is not a virgin.

I think a while how to explain it simply. Then I tell Ghorbash that we don't have the tradition that only the chief gets to have wives. Outside Orc villages, every man expects to get a wife. But since men have the urge to have sex with several women, and the numbers of men and women are about equal, many women end up seduced by men they are not married to. Since you can lose your cherry only once, it no longer matters so much afterwards if you have more sex, as long as you don't act in a scandalous way in front of people. The point is: there simply aren't enough virgins to marry.

I inform Ghorbash there are very big cultural and regional differences. For example, Nord communities outside Skyrim tend to be very strict compared to Skyrim about their girls remaining pure for their husbands. The Bretons, in turn, are very relaxed about it. Thus I, a half-Nord raised among Bretons, lost my maidenhood at 17 and didn't dare tell my Nord mother until much later, while my best friend, a pure-blood Breton, did it a lot younger without any shame, or at least not much. But she still took good care to behave decently in public, and act as inexperienced as possible with the guy she eventually got married to.

I don't know much about Imperials or Redguards, but in eastern Skyrim the Nords strongly dislike men of other races accosting "their" women, whereas in a big cosmopolitan city like Solitud, everything goes.

Especially female mages who can cast the Contraception  spell have little scruples about casual sex. Other women would have to buy an Amulet of Dibella  or have a Dibella statue enchanted. Wearing an amulet of Dibella and praying at any god's shrine, you will get to know whether or not you are fertile right now, and when you are near the enchanted statue, you will automatically know it. Wealthy women tend to have such a statue in their bedrooms. Any halfway decent girl, though, would be too embarrassed to let her parents see something like that. That's why there's that hugely popular esoteric teaching that claims that certain magic numbers can reveal exactly on which days, counting from the end of your last menstruation, you might get pregnant – on other days you can safely have sex.

"Yeah, and that's why we suck men's penises," I return to the original topic, noticing that menstruation is evidently not something Ghorbash is keen to hear about. "Firstly because men insist, secondly because you don't get pregnant that way, and thirdly because several days each month, women can't do anything else, so if the husband is horny, oral is the only thing to do because outside Orc villages men have only one wife."

"How many men you've had sex with?" Ghorbash asks.

I make him swear in the name of Malacath he'll never tell anyone, and then I tell him. It's a horribly large number. Well, you know most of them, that is the ones I've been with during my Dragonborn adventure. There were a few back home in High Rock.

I would never let a man know something like that, but I want to avoid at all costs that Ghorbash should begin to think that we are a couple. In the Orcs' world, sex is never casual. A man gets his need for promiscuity satisfied by having several wives, not by chatting up women at inns and such. Admittedly, Ghorbash wanted to leave that world, but he still isn't properly prepared for ours, and he'd better learn from me and my followers who we wish him well rather than get into an awful lot of trouble someday, unable to put up with his first girlfriend leaving him. That's the reason I want him freed from possible illusions. And maybe I still shouldn't have told him. But I already did. Maybe I'm a little drunk. We'd better return to the party.

I go home with Lucia relatively early, because Carlotta wants Mila to go to sleep. In order to not give Mila a reason to complain it's unfair, I take Lucia, her best friend, home as well.

a small wooden house at night, in the rain, another house vaguely visible on the left
I hope those roofs are watertight enough.
(At least it's good those people have a roof over their heads, says Lucia.)

Proudspire Manor, Solitud, Haafingar, Skyrim

There aren't many people on the streets this early:

In the slowly emerging morning light, the city looks like fairytale and I feel highly energized. Jordis, however, doesn't seem quite as happy as I would have thought she'd be. But I naturally don't want to ask her anything with Ghorbash hearing. So we just bathe, have breakfast and head for the harbor.
morning, paved square near the Solitud marketplace, Beirand's smithy faintly visible up ahead
We exit the city proper by the sidegate, the door leading to which you can just barely see on the right under the arch.
That's the shortest way to the northern part of the harbor.

We take a boat to the eastern shore. During our journey across the marshland, we kill a chaurus. This somewhat forbidding landscape looks particularly wonderful on this cold morning:
[series of 4 pictures you can click through; click on the first picture to make it big, then press the right arrow to see the next picture etc.; press  Esc to return to the text]

Headed for Windward Ruins southwest of Dånstar, we make a slight detour to visit the Pale Imperial Camp.

I succeed in leaving Ghorbash talking to the blacksmith and ask Jordis about last night. She tells us Ghorbash was excited all right, but when she wanted to suck on his penis, he seemed repulsed.
Oh... I'm so sorry. Lydia and I already knew from Borgakh that Orcs don't do oral or anal, ever. It simply makes no sense to them. I had forgotten to warn Jordis.
"He actually seemed, like, afraid," says Jordis. "He even lost his erection."
"I'm not surprised. Have you noticed what kind of teeth Orcs have, women too?"
"What happened then?" enquires Lydia.
Well, Jordis was very gentle and patient with Ghorbash and got him hard again and when she squeezed him with her vaginal muscles, he turned into a real beast. He fucked her fast and hard and came soon. But he was kind of confused. Jordis thinks that maybe she wasn't as loud as I had been last night (I cast my eyes down, but I can still notice Lydia grinning; I must have been really loud), so maybe he thought something was wrong but he couldn't know why. After all, I and Jordis are the only sex partners he's ever had.
All in all, the situation was somewhat awkward and neither of them didn't really know what to talk about afterwards, and so they went to sleep without even waiting for Ghorbash to get hard again. But she did have a loud orgasm in the morning, so it was not a complete disaster.

We fetch Ghorbash and run southeast, to Windward Ruins. Just like Faralda has told me, there's a pedestal inside that snowy ruin of I've-no-idea-what. After we've killed a couple of skeevers, I put the book onto the pedestal and cast the Flames  spell at it as instructed.

When I open the book again, it has one more page of text, just as cryptic as the previous ones. I must find a mage or a priest who could explain what it means. I mean, I can understand that I'll have to cast a frost spell the next time, but me and my followers have no chance of finding out the correct location by the undescription in the book.

Since Lydia has no reason for going to Dånstar today, we run south.
snowy spruce forest ahead, shadows of the trees on the ground, high mountain in the distance
The snowy spruce forests in this region are always a delight. I never grow tired of looking at them.

In the mountains southwest of Fort Dunstad should be a very ancient site called The Dunpar Wall. Like every Nord in Skyrim, Lydia and Jordis know it's incredibly old, but don't really have an idea what exactly it is. Most importantly, they don't know what dangers (or possibly excitements) we might encounter there. We'll check the place out today. As I've already mentioned to you, we're not going to Winterhold to fetch Jenassa just yet, because we want to be in Hviterun tomorrow – as well as do what we had planned on doing with Ghorbash two days later.

Halfway between Windward Ruins and the supposed location of The Dunpar Wall is the Hall of the Vigilant, the headquarters of the virrs where we have already been once.

We stop only for a moment to say hello to a man in front of the house. He doesn't seem as fervent as they usually are, so I take a chance showing him Faralda's book and asking him if he can make any sense of the description of the next location. He says he can't, but maybe someone in the town can.
The town?
Yeah, there's a town called Dunparwall around that ancient site.
I smile and ask if he possibly knows a road there, and he tries hard not to smile back and shows on my map where the path is.
I thank him cordially and then he smiles after all. I refrain from hugging him, because another virr has just come out of the house.

On our way up the mountain, we discover a vein of a material called Stone Quarry (I've no idea what it may be good for) and admire spectacular views of Fort Dunstad in the midst of a snowy forest.

Soon we indeed discover a town.

The massive wooden grating-gate is opened and we enter.

The people here are on the unsophisticated side, leading a simple life in a harsh climate.

There are quite a few streets and buildings. With most of them squeezed into narrow spaces between mountains, nice views are rare. But I succeed in stealing a glance at a letter that is not addressed to me:

We walk around for a couple of hours, but then I realize we're having good daylight and a nice weather, so we'd better check out that thalmor fortress that is supposed to be east of here. It's not far, but we don't know if it's possible to ascend the mountains from this side. So let's find out.

The climb is moderately challenging, but there are paths between mountains most of the way. North-northwest of our destination, we stumble upon a citadel with a few bandits whom we kill without difficulty.

A big but low square-shaped castle which is presumably Fort Snowshield is visible from here.

We approach it cautiously, but I can't detect anybody on the outside. Most of the structure seems to be inside the mountain. We climb onto the roof of the visible part. There is absolutely nothing to be found there. So we'll have to go in through the front door.

It opens into a small lobby, beyond which is a hall with several thalmors. We are promptly noticed and find ourselves fighting a messy battle with new groups of enemies turning up from various directions.

The hall has thick columns in the middle and a lot of furniture, so it's very difficult to maneuver, and I'm in fact very worried about my followers because we are outnumbered rather badly. But the girls' reflexes are still perfect and even Ghorbash survives the ordeal.

Before exploring the rest of the stronghold, I use the Ritual Stone  power and succeed in awakening almost a dozen killed thalmors. I hadn't used it for such a long time I had already forgotten how horribly zombies groan. Well, I shouldn't have even bothered, because there are few enemies left.
protagonist aiming bow at the lower leg of a man sitting on a bench just behind the corner
I can only hit this leg from this angle, and I don't dare sneak any closer. This will hopefully be enough to disable him.

The place is very clean, has a large dormitory, dining rooms, books and a large map of Skyrim, but unfortunately no secret documents. (The most intriguing thing we find are the notes of someone who was evidently translating a book from the Dwemer language.) But at least we destroyed a thalmor base.
an oblong stone hall with tens of neat beds on both sides of a long brown carpet
Unlike in bandit fortresses, we found the dormitory empty. No one was sleeping while their comrades fought the intruders (us).

One of these days, when we happen to be near Solitud, I'll tell Velvus about this – after I've told Tullius. And, come to think of it, I ought to tell Yrsarald first. Tullius has truly made me suspicious about that defeatist legate.

The sun is setting. (Outside, I mean.) The view from the mountain is very beautiful. The direct way back to Dunparwall where I intend to spend the night passes by Fort Dunstad pretty close and I'm not in the mood of fighting bandits, so we head southwest instead and end up so close to Laintar Dale that we can see it at some distance. We turn back towards the mountains in the northwest and return to Dunparwall where we walk around, talk to people and shop.

This is the Dunparwall Inn:

It has long narrow corridors on three storeys and quite a few small rooms. We get one each. The only roomy place apart from the taproom is a nice lounge of sorts on the second floor:
